Augusta Big Read Kickoff! Keynote Speaker Craig Hotchkiss

Free and open to the community! Call 562-3348 for more information. Keynote speaker Craig Hotchkiss of the Mark Twain House discusses "Tom & Huck: A Boy Comes of Age." This program is free and open to the public. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885) are two “boys’ books” that helped to make Twain rich and famous, but they are radically different in both substance and tone. The audience will have an opportunity to learn what motivated Mark Twain to write a sequel composed of two such distinct stories, and to see how both the joy and tragedy of Samuel Clemens’ own maturation as a businessman, husband, father and writer spurred him to pen perhaps his two most popular books.

Event Location: Augusta School, Augusta, MT 59410

Date: Wed, Oct 1, 2014

Adventure Scrapbook

Tom Sawyer's adventures are more than just fun stories -- they help shape who Tom is, and who he becomes. So too do our own adventures make us who we are. We invite you to share with us your adventures for our scrapbook. Tell us about something you experienced that, like Tom's adventures, helped shape the person you are now. Maybe it's an actual adventure you went on, or a particular experience on a holiday. Maybe it's a friendship you have, or just a conversation you had once that made you look at something in a different way. All submissions will be posted on the Tom Sawyer Big Read website, www.tomsawyerbigread.com and a physical copy will be pinned to the white washed fence at the Lewis and Clark Library!

Big Read Movie @ Lewis & Clark Library: The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985)

The Adventures of Mark Twain is a 1985 stop motion animated film. The film features a series of vignettes extracted from several of Mark Twain's works, built around a plot that features Twain's attempts to keep his "appointment" with Halley's Comet. Twain and three children, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Becky Thatcher, travel on an airship between various adventures. The concept was inspired by a famous quote by the author: "I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year (1910), and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Halley's Comet. The Almighty has said, no doubt: 'Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together." Twain died April 21, 1910, one day after Halley's Comet reached perihelion in 1910. From wikipedia.org

Mark Twain Impersonator Stephen Hollen

Stephen Hollen is a humorist, storyteller, performer, writer and poet… and a Mark Twain Impersonator. Stephen became a “Twainiac” some time ago when he began to read Twain’s books. The irony and wit Twain as a Humorist had as he appeared on stage shows forth easily in his speeches and lectures. It was simply serendipity that led Stephen Hollen to impersonate Mark Twain. The first time someone told him he looked like Twain, he simply smiled. After it happened dozens of times, someone finally said. “you know… you like to tell stories, you look like Mark Twain and you love his wit… why not be Twain?”
