The Big Write Deadline

All are invited to submit short stories, graphic stories, poetry, or song lyrics to our annual Big Write creative writing competition. Winners will receive cash prizes! Submissions will be accepted starting on January 4 with a deadline of March 1. Please visit www.galesburglibrary.org for rules and age brackets.

The Big Read Kick-Off

The Big Read of "Sun, Stone, and Shadows" will kick off with a performance of traditional Mexican dances by the Quad Cities Ballet Folklórico at the historic Orpheum Theatre. Ballet Folklórico is a beautiful combination of colorful costumes, mariachi music, and folk dance. Admission is free, and all ages are invited to attend. This event is the first opportunity to pick up a free copy of "Sun, Stone, and Shadows."

Book Discussion: "Boom, Bust, Exodus" at Galesburg Public Library

The book "Boom, Bust, Exodus" by Chad Broughton will be discussed. Broughton is a former professor at Knox College in Galesburg and the book explores Maytag's removal from Galesburg to Reynosa, Mexico and the consequences for both cities. The discussion will be followed by a short video about NAFTA.

Author Talk and Signing

The author of "Boom, Bust, Exodus" will hold an open discussion of his book. Chad Broughton is a former professor at Knox College and is now a senior lecturer in public policy at the University of Chicago. Come meet the author, ask questions, and get your copy of his book signed. This event is free.

Salsa 29

Have you always wanted to learn how to salsa? Then come join Julio Barrenzuela for a unique program that will introduce its participants to Latin culture through festive music and popular dances, in order to build better relationships, cultural understanding and diversity. Book Discussion: "Esperanza Rising" and "Sun, Stone, and Shadows" at Galesburg Public Library

Chapter Chompers, the teen book club, will discuss "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Muñoz Ryan and "Sun, Stone, and Shadows" while pigging out on pizza. Open to teens 12-18 (or grades 6-12). Registration is required. Participants will receive a free copy of the book of their choice when they sign up.

The Boxcar People

This year’s keynote speaker, Luz Schick, will give an update on her documentary "The Boxcar People" (©IVPTC, 60 minutes) and will show the documentary. The Boxcar People explores the history of Mexican immigrant railroad workers in Galesburg and the boxcar communities they called home. This is a story of strong and proud people who overcame discrimination to claim a part of the American Dream. This event is free.
