Poe's "Raven" Exhibit

"Nevermore" becomes "Evermore" in this exhibit on the enduring appeal of Poe's "The Raven" depicted and adapted in cinema, print and popular culture. The display will feature a rare 1850 edition of "The Raven" as it appeared in Volume 2 of "The works of the late Edgar Allan Poe: with notices of his life and genius" on loan from the Bullis Rare Book Collection at the Macedon Public Library. "Ode to Poe" a welded steel Raven by sculptor Wayne Williams stands guard over the exhibit. The sculpture is on loan from the Phelps Arts Center.

Masquerade Ball

As the official kick-off of The Big Read, historic Sonnenberg Mansion is the perfect fit for a masquerade ball in honor of Edgar Allan Poe. The lights will be dimmed as dramatic readings of Poe’s major works, like “The Raven” and The Tell-Tale Heart, are chillingly delivered by state officials and other community members to a captivated audience. Students from Canandaigua Academy’s Drama Department will play the parts of Poe’s troubled characters including Fortunato, Roderick Usher, and Prince Prospero, and Poe himself will make an appearance. Guests will be challenged to guess the characters and the stories or poems they hail from. Costumes will be judged and prizes awarded. Teens and adults are welcome at this ticketed, catered event.

Poe Projected: The Mystery of Edgar Allan Poe

Poe Projected Film Series begins with "The Mystery of Edgar Allan Poe," a bio-film that explores the tragedies and torments of Poe’s life - the underpinning of his dark and brilliant art. We will look at how Poe inspired director Roger Corman to project Poe onto the big screen in his 1960s “Poe Cycle.” We will screen three films from the "Poe Cycle."

Writing Killer Fiction: A Mystery Writer's Workshop

Mystery Fiction writer Charles Benoit will teach a four-session writing workshop that will explore the key elements of this exciting and always popular genre, the mystery, first pioneered by Edgar Allan Poe. It includes creating believable characters and realistic dialogue and compelling settings, mapping out your mystery, playing fair with the reader and getting the technical details right. Adult participants will have the opportunity to share their writing—whether it’s short pieces from a work in progress, or things written specifically for this class—and they will find out what publishers and editors are looking for in today’s mystery market. Charles Benoit is a successful new author in the mystery genre. His debut novel, Relative Danger was named Best Mystery / Suspense Book of the Year by the Publishers Marketing Association and was nominated for an Edgar Award. His second book, Out of Order was published by Poisoned Pen Press. This writer’s group is open to adults only.

The Poe Projected classic film series continues with this screening of "The House of Usher." Close to the original story, House of Usher starts director Roger Corman's 8-film Poe Cycle. Poe Panel Discussion

Wood Library will also host a panel discussion surrounding the stories and poetry, the author, the history, and the dark themes of Edgar Allan Poe. Kathi Nacca, retired Canandaigua Academy English Teacher and Wood Library employee, will moderate a panel of Poe experts as they discuss his many poems and short stories. Panel speakers include Sam Martina, Scott Schauman, Julie Leahey, Bob Burns and Keith Pedzich. Students studying the work for the first time and adults revisiting it for a second time are encouraged to join the panel in discussion. Free and open to all ages. A Midnight Dreary: Tales of Edgar Allan Poe

Bristol Valley Theater and the Veteran's Administration collaborate with Wood Library and The Big Read to celebrate the 200th birthday of America's Master of the Macabre, in a dramatic performance of Edgar Allan Poe's most haunting tales. Featuring BVT’s Artistic Director Karin Bowersock and local actor Jim Ditmars. Ditmars has been with Bristol Valley Theater since 1995 and is no stranger to dramatic macabre. His past roles have included Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors, Major Powell in Corpse! and Tomton in the world premiere of Nevermore. Students from Canandaigua Academy will grace the stage and treat the audience to period Gothic choral pieces. Performances are free and open to the public. The event will be held at the Veteran's Administration Auditorium in Building #5. Parking nearby.

Gothic Jewelry Workshop

The Poe Projected classic film series concludes with a screening of "The Masque of the Red Death." Prince Prospero and his subjects take refuge in Prospero's castle, hoping to escape the dread Red Death disease that is decimating the countryside. Wood Library Cafe - After Dark

Wood Library Café, a monthly daytime event since 2003, will host a special “after-dark” cafe in October. Cafe volunteers will transform the cafe into one with a Poe-like ambiance.
