Big Read Kick-Off and Reception

The first event of the Albany-Dougherty County Big Read project is the Kick-Off Celebration and Reception, which is free and open to the public and features local city, county and education officials. The Big Read Kick-Off and Reception provides an introduction to and an overview of the Big Read activities in February, 2014 and also an opportunity for citizens of the community to connect and continue discussions about "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and other Big Read activities. Following the Kick-Off, paticipants will enjoy Hurston style food, conversation and entertainment provided by the Southern Arts Jazz Ensemble.

Dramatization of Hurston's One Act Play "Color Struck"

Drama students in the Albany State University Fine Arts Department, directed by Dr. Eve Lambert, present a lively interpretation of Hurston's "Color Struck," a one act play that was never staged during the Harlem Renaissance. The play chronicles the story of a diverse community of cakewalkers who are traveling to participate in a dance competition but reveal that they are not immune to the debilitating problems of "color" in society.
