Gallery Exhibit: Beyond Reading

Susan McNally and Karen Fulk showcase their visual and written works of art that include the themes of surrealism and transcendence. McNally's work relies heavily on symbolism and portraiture, with art historical references to Frida Kahlo's work and accompanying poetry. Information about The Big Read will be displayed in the gallery, and books available for purchase by gallery visitors.

"Sun, Stone and Shadows" Solstice Weekend

We're kicking off The Big Read 2014 in Yuba-Sutter with a four-day weekend that starts at the moment of the Vernal Equinox at 9:57 am Pacific Time on Thursday, March 20. The Equinox or Solstice is celebrated most famously in the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza, when the shadows cast from the El Castillo pyramid evoke the feathered-serpent god Kukulkan slithering down its steps. Volunteers will conduct pop-up readings of selections from "Sun, Stone and Shadows" -- in both English and Spanish -- throughout Yuba and Sutter Counties, Thursday through Sunday. Check the calendar for other events during the kick-off weekend.

The Art of Frida Kahlo and Remedios Varo

Yuba College Professor Sara Sealander presents an illustrated lecture on surrealist painters Remedios Varo and Frida Kahlo, whose life and work were interwoven with the artistic and literary figures of 20th century Mexico, and whose art was described by Andre Breton as a "ribbon around a bomb." Following the lecture, there will be a fiesta-style reception to celebrate the launch of The Big Read in Yuba-Sutter.

Fiesta

Following the keynote lecture by artist and art professor Sara Sealander, attendees are invited to a fiesta-style reception that feature Mexican fare and an exhibit on The Big Read. All attendees will be offered a copy of the book, "Sun, Stone and Shadows" and a reader's guide for a donation of $2 or more. The lecture and reception is open to the public and free of charge.

Cesar Chavez: The Man and the Legacy

Presentation by Carlos Alcala, executive director of the Chicano Latino Caucus in California. Mr. Alcala, who was a fulltime UFW volunteer in Salinas for Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, is the former National Director of Education Litigation for the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund and a professor at UC Berkeley. While at Harvard Law, he was Senior Articles Editor for the Harvard Civil Rights Civil Liberties Law Review. His lecture is free and open to the public. Parking on campus is $2.

Cuentos y Comida: Community lunch, Mexican fare, readings

At this month's community lunch, hosted by St. John's Episcopal (which also runs the food shelf and clothes closet in Marysville), guests will be served Mexican fare, with a side of Sun, Stone and Shadows. Readings from the book will be served up, along with a printed poem by Octavio Paz at every place setting. Two copies of the book also will be given away to those whose chairs have been secretly tagged.

Live Oak Art Walk - Viva Mexico!

This year's Live Oak Art Walk, co-sponsored by the Yuba Sutter Regional Arts Council and the Live Oak Community Resource Center, will feature Mexican themes and include a booth for The Big Read. Excerpts from Sun, Stone and Shadows will be read, in English and Spanish, throughout the day, and copies of the book and reader's guide will be distributed. Nearly half of Live Oak's 8,300 population is Latino.

Easter EGGStravaganza

Calidanza - Mi Mexico

Calidanza - the 22 dancers and six musicians of this professional Mexican folk and contemporary dance company - will present "Mi Mexico" -- a show incorporating dances from the different cultural regions of Mexico, including Sinaloa, Jalisco and Veracruz, complemented by fusion and contemporary choreos. Information about The Big Read's selection, "Sun, Stone and Shadows" will be available along with copies of the book for sale. Tickets to the dance performance are $25 or $20 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at the Yuba College Public Events Dept., the Yuba College Sutter County Center (3301 E. Live Oak Children's Fair/Feria de Ninos Live Oak

The Live Oak Community Center, AKA "The Spot," will conduct a children's fair to celebrate Dia para los Ninos. Games and art activities will include a "Big Read Booth" with stories from companion book, "The Lizard and the Sun" being read aloud in a group as well as read individually. Parents will be encouraged to pick up Spanish and English editions of "Sun, Stone, and Shadows."

Latino entrepreneur, actor and comedian Angel Diaz will feature material from "Sun, Stone and Shadows" in his upcoming comedy showcase, Angel Diaz Presents: Comedy Night at The Refuge. The Arts Council challenged Mr. Diaz to write material about The Big Read and reading especially for this event, which features two other Latino comics as well. Ten copies of the book will be given away to lucky members of the audience, with additional books available for purchase at the event.

Shaping Sun, Stone and Shadows - pottery weekend workshop

Ceramic artist and teacher Chris Thompson conducts a two-day workshop on creating pottery by hand with three different techniques used by Mexican craftsmen for centuries. Each day of the two-day workshop will begin with readings of excerpts from several stories and a discussion of the themes represented therein. Participants will each make several objects based on the themes, using different techniques demonstrated. Items will be fired and returned. There is a $20 fee for materials ($10 for Arts Council members).

Artist Tamra Spoto will lead her students through an exploration of Mexican pottery shapes and themes found in The Big Read book (excerpts will be read). Senior Center art classes are a program of the Yuba City Dept. of Parks and Recreation. Each participant will receive a copy of Sun, Stone and Shadows, and come away with a finished piece.

Mexican Literature of the 20th Century Lecture

The Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council presents a lecture by Ramon Munoz on Wednesday, May 14 at the Lee Burrows Theatre (630 E Street, Marysville) from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Topics discussed will include Octavio Paz’s perspective on Mexican culture, Magical Realism in Mexican Literature and the Mexican Revolution and its influence on Mexican Literature. Ramón Muñoz teaches Spanish at Yuba College in Marysville, CA and is the Spanish Editorial Consultant for Sí Magazine. Thanks to Migrant Education and Upward Bound, he was the first member of his family to graduate from high school and go on to College. Muñoz holds degrees in Spanish and French from CSU Chico (BA) and CSU Sacramento (MA). Studies abroad include: Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica and France. He has teaching experience at different levels: K-12, Adult Education and College.

Free Screening: "The Storm That Swept Mexico"

A free screening of the acclaimed PBS documentary, “The Storm that Swept Mexico,” will be hosted by the Yuba County Library as part of The Big Read Yuba-Sutter 2014. Near the start of a century that would see political and societal upheavals around the world, the Mexican Revolution was the first major one to be captured on film. The Storm That Swept Mexico uses photos and film footage from the earliest days of cinema, bringing history – and famous figures like Emiliano Zapata & “Pancho” Villa – to life. Several lucky audience members will win a free copy of The Big Read book, “Sun, Stone and Shadows,” an anthology of great Mexican short stories. It’s also available for check-out from the Library’s circulating collection. The two-hour program will begin promptly at 5:30 pm in the Library’s Community Room. Don’t miss a minute!
