The Big Read Finale Event

Keynote speaker Jay Jennings will explain why True Grit is not just a great genre story but great literature, offer biographical information about Mr. Portis and his writing career as a journalist and novelist, and discuss his other novels. In addition, he will reveal some background information about how both movie versions were made and take the audience on a slide-show tour of the actual landscape in Arkansas and Oklahoma where True Grit and the pursuit of Tom Chaney is set. A friend of Charles Portis for 30 years, Jay Jennings is a freelance writer, whose journalism, humor, and essays have appeared in many national literary journals, magazines, and newspapers, including the New York Times, the Oxford American, Garden & Gun, and Travel & Leisure. He is a regular contributor to the New York Times Book Review and the San Francisco Chronicle’s Books section. Most recently, he edited and wrote the introduction to "Escape Velocity: A Charles Portis Miscellany,” a collection of journalism, humor, short stories and drama by the author of "True Grit.” Along with TV writer Graham Gordy (“Rectify,” “Quarry”), he has optioned the rights to the Portis novel “The Dog of the South,” and they are adapting it as a feature film.
