March 1,2013 6:30 p.m. Kick-off Event: Pulling in the Horizon: Celebrating Their Eyes Were Watching God. Keynote speaker Dr. Michelle Martin, University of South Carolina's Augusta Baker Chair in Childhood Literacy, will be discussing storytelling a sense of community for engaging young adults in the art of reading. Her lively discussion will be accompanied with a musical presentation by All That Jazz: Allen University’s Jazz Ensemble. Emerging artists representing Allen University's Iconic Arts will present a performance titled Picture This, which will bring to life excerpts from Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God.

March 16, 11:00 a.m. Pulling in the Horizon Janie’s Hair/Hair Dance Reading Dr. Dianne Johnson, Children’s Literature Author, and English Professor at the University of South Carolina, will present a lecture on the book's focus on Janie's hair. Her presentation will also include a reading from her children's book Hair Dance which celebrates the beauty of African American hair through verse and stunning photographs of African American girls. A panel of scholars from Morris College, University of South Carolina, Sumter, and Allen University will discuss the various facets of Hurston's life and works and the connections that can be with Sumter, South Carolina educator and creative writer Arthenia J. Bates Millican. Students from Morris College will be performing various sections of the book. The event will be open to the public and will be promoted to local high schools and to students attending Morris College and Allen University (both HBCU) and Coastal Carolina Technical College and the University of South Carolina, Sumter.

Pulling in the Horizon: How A Black Lady Tells It Straight 2011 National Book Award Winner Poet Nikky Finney and Emmy Winning Poet, Novelist, Essayist, and Playwright Kwame Dawes will present a public reading (6:30 pm)at Allen University's Student Center. The event will have a precursor on the same day, a series of writing workshops (starting at 10:00 am and ending at 3:00 pm) hosted by Dawes and Finney and Allen University's Poet and Fiction writers, Charlene Spearen and Vicki Cleveland. The evening public reading will feature Allen University's stellar Jazz Ensemble band and selected reading by members of Allen University's Iconic Arts organization.
