Named in honor of Luna Kaufman, Holocaust survivor and pioneer in Holocaust Education, our annual contest is open to students in grade 7 through college and includes creative writing and both two and three-dimensional art. THE WRITING CONTEST DEADLINE IS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2013. THE ART CONTEST DEADLINE is THURSDAY, MARCH 28, 2013. The following themes from A Lesson Before Dying are the subjects for the Annual Luna Kaufman Writing and Art Contest for 2013. All submitted works should conform to one of these four themes: (1) Responding to Injustice: Author Ernest J. Gaines allows the reader to witness the dangerous consequences of social injustice, as well as the transformative effects of taking individual responsibility and acting to right a wrong. Express your interpretation of standing up for the rights of others. (2) Respect and Human Dignity: In the course of the trial, Jefferson, one of the main characters in the book, is dehumanized. Bullying and acts of genocide dehumanize the victims. How does one recover human dignity in the face of dehumanization? (3) Racism and Discrimination: This book offers powerful depictions of the injustice of segregation and the negative consequences for all affected by it. Discrimination is not just based on race; individuals experience it because of their age, religion, body image, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Students can highlight any elements of racism and discrimination as part of their creative responses to this theme (4) Lessons Learned: Lessons are learned in the classroom as well as in the circumstances of everyday living and in response to the hardships of others. Share your ideas about the lessons of this book. More information and submission instructions are available on the website: www.chhange.org

An interactive videoconference with Author, Ernest J. Gaines Through the wonder of technology, please join us in a book discussion with Ernest J. Gaines, author of “A Lesson Before Dying”. Learn first-hand how the novel came to be written, why he chose the characters and setting for the novel and about his love for the written word as you share your thoughts and questions with him. Ernest J. Gaines was born in 1933 on the River Lake plantation in Pointe Coupe Parish, Louisiana, the setting for most of his fiction. Raised by his crippled Aunt, Augustine Jeffers, Gaines attended the plantation school only 5 months each year and by the age of nine was picking cotton in the plantation fields the rest of the year. In 1948, at the age of 15, he left Louisiana to join his parents in California where he felt he would be able to receive a better education than he would have had if he stayed in Louisiana. For the first time in his life, Mr. Gaines was able to visit a public library since the libraries in Louisiana were for whites only. Mr. Gaines attended San Francisco State University, publishing his first short story in 1956. After graduating, he spent some time in the Army and then was awarded a writing fellowship to Stanford University. Published in 1993, “A Lesson Before Dying” won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and was a 1997 Oprah Book Club selection.
