A $1,000 scholarship is available to graduating high school seniors (public, private or homeschooled) in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau or St. Johns counties in Florida whose permanent address is in one of these counties and will be in a program of study by the fall of 2013 at an accredited institution of higher education (this includes a four-year college or university, a two- year community/state college, or a vocational/technical school). To enter, read the book A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines and write an essay of not less than 1500 but not more than 3000 words on the following topic to be eligible for the scholarship: Grant Wiggins, the teacher in A Lesson Before Dying, is asked to "teach" a condemned man to be a man, something beyond any classroom lesson he is prepared for. What other "jobs" or "roles" are expected of teachers today? How are they similar or different from those pushed upon Grant?
