Kickoff

Kick-Off events included a decorated stick horse contest, hot dog lunch, reading of the True Grit proclamation by Mayor Brinlee, "True Grit: Stories of the Old West" told by Ruth Brelsford, plus The Sunset Band from McAlester playing County and Western songs. People enjoyed having the pictures taken behind the silhouette of Rooster Cogburn and Mattie Ross. With the cool weather and rainfall the scheduled re-enactment was scaled down and performed during the stories and music. The audience thought the improv between the stories and the songs presented that day was excellent. The audience was able to enjoy refreshments of lemonade, cookies, and coffee through-out the program as the atmosphere was cozy and laid back.

Live Story Book Tour of True Grit

On Halloween night, the library transformed into scenes from the book “True Grit”. Visitors/Trick-or-Treater’s of all ages helped Mattie Ross search to find someone with ‘true grit.’ She first met up with Rooster Cogburn to ask the famous quote, “They tell me you are a man with true grit.” Then they saw Tom Chaney, through the bar room doors, losing all of his money in a poker game and heard Mattie explain why her father was shot by such a coward. The next scene was LaBoeuf asleep on his bedroll. Mattie told of her admiration for the Texas Ranger. Judge Isaac Parker in his defense told that he did not hang anyone. The law hung them. The tour ended at the rattlesnake pit where young Mattie had fallen into. From the pit, the older Mattie Ross stepped out and appeared to explain how she had the grit to survive that awful event and what she went on to do with the rest of her life.
