The Big Read: Creating Legacy and Memoir

Have you led an adventurous, exotic, or otherwise unusual life? Are your experiences ones that would entertain, encourage or inspire others?  Have you traveled the world, met interesting characters or accomplished something noteworthy?  Do you have children or grandchildren for whom you’d like to leave a written legacy?  Have you survived a difficult life passage that has put you in a position to offer hope and help to others? Importantly, have you ever wanted to record your experience to share with others? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, this two-part workshop on writing memoir and legacy will provide you with the direction and the tools to begin. Sponsored in part by the Tehama County Arts Council, the workshop is offered in conjunction with its Big Read book selection, Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich. It is, however, open to all. Reading the book is not a pre-requisite for registration. The task of a memoirist is to translate his or her life experience into a compelling and interesting story. Whether writing simply to share life experience with family and friends or to entertain or inspire a larger audience, this workshop will introduce participants to the essentials of effective writing for the memoir genre. Aren’t all memoirs alike? In a word, no. To help participants discern the purpose, scope and audience for their own writing, we will begin by examining the basic difference between memoir and autobiography and do some exploratory exercises to determine topical focus. We’ll also review a few exemplary models before moving into the nuts and bolts of the genre. We will devote time to exploring and practicing key aspects of craft—story arc and plot, character development, setting, dialogue, description and tone. Using literary devices effectively produces crisp and vivid narrative and allows you as writer to breathe life into your words on the page. Part one of the workshop will focus on narrowing participant topic focus and applying the elements of craft; part two will cover constructive critique methods, peer critique, selected readings, editing/revision, publishing options, tips for marketing and promotion and protecting intellectual property. This course is taught by Claudia Mosby, a writer and educator in Northern California. She is the author of the forthcoming Writing InsideOut: Using the Power of Words to Heal and editor of Voices From Inside (2012), collected writings from an expressive writing workshop she developed and facilitated for incarcerated women. She has published more than 200 newspaper and magazine articles and writes a column on the midlife passage for EW Scripps newspapers. Cost is $60 for two half-days of instruction. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-memoir-and-legacy-workshop-by-claudia-mosby-tickets-10410448933?ref=ecal Join us for what promises to be an exciting and productive journey down memory lane!
