The Things We Carry: Our Objects in Motion -museum exhibit opening - Jan 11-May

The Things We Carry: Our Objects in Motion -museum exhibit "They carried all they could bear, and then some, including a silent awe for the terrible power of the things they carried." —Tim O'Brien, in The Things They Carried This exhibition is inspired, in part, by Tim O’Brien’s book The Things They Carried, which our county is reading and discussing this year in the National Endowment for the Arts “Big Read” program. ...Physical things carry traces of people we have loved, episodes of joy and terror, and places we may have heard of, but never visited in person. Through our objects, we carry with us complex emotions and histories. At times, in contemplating these material things, we discover new insights about where we have come from and whom we might become. Exhibit will feature stories about journeys—from people living in Kittitas County— told through the medium of physical things. January 11-May This exhibit supports the county’s “Big Read” program, in which many of us will read and discuss Tim O’Brien’s book, The Things They Carried, leading up to Tim O’Brien’s visit to Ellensburg in April 2017, and also supports the university’s year-long dialogue about migration and immigration. http://www.cwu.edu/printpdf/%E2%80%9C-things-we-carry%E2%80%9D-exhibit-opens-january-11

It will culminate in a visit to the CWU campus and Ellensburg community by author Tim O’Brien during the week of April 24th. The wider community will be invited to participate in this class. The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers - film

When in 1971 Daniel Ellsberg leaked a secret Pentagon history of U.S. involvement in Vietnam to the press, the shockwaves it set off may have been due nearly as much to the leaker as to the information leaked. While Americans were painstakingly digesting the documents’ long and byzantine history — which showed the nation’s leaders, both Democratic and Republican, lying about the facts of the war, proclaiming their desire for peace while seeking a wider war, declaring fidelity to democracy while sabotaging elections, and exhibiting a sweeping callousness to the loss of both Vietnamese and American lives — Ellsberg himself dramatically embodied the country’s division over the Vietnam War. Film introduction by Cynthia Mitchell, CWU Associate Professor of Journalism whose research, service and teaching passions revolve around the First Amendment.
